Sunny Day Real Estate - "Seven" (Live on Jimmy Fallon)

This song takes me back about fifteen years ago...

Every month in high school I would look forward to flipping through the pages of my copy of Alternative Press in search for my next musical discovery. Sunny Day Real Estate had just released "Diary" on Sub Pop Records and I was fascinated with the advertisement featuring the artwork from the album. It was one of the first albums that I ever bought just because of the artwork alone. When I listened to the album the first time I was confused. The album was dark, moody and unlike anything I had ever heard before. It wasn't punk. It wasn't alternative. It wasn't rock. It sounded kind of like Shudder To Think, but was far more up tempo. It grew on me over the years and became one of my favorite albums. While in college I had the chance to see them at The Bottleneck in Lawrence, KS on their first reunion tour in 1998. They had just released the album "How It Feels To Be Something On."

Recently the band reunited with the original line up to play a string of shows this fall. In addition they released "Dairy" and "LP2" on vinyl with additional tracks. Here's their recent performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Crazy Days

The last month has been nuts. I have split my time between Branson and
Springfield trying to transition my office to the new location. We
sold our house today after only 24 hours on the market. So... Now the
search begins.

Time Flys

Wow... Things have been a little busy around here. I just wrapped up
the last class of Financial Peace University and Town Hall For Hope.
I'm also in the process of transitioning my office to Branson, MO. In
addition we're prepping the house to sell in the next 6 weeks. Did I
say we are headed camping? Yeah... That too!

Cover Songs: P.O.S. - "Why Go" (by Pearl Jam)

If I was to rewind back to 1992 and look at the CDs that I listened to over and over again and again, Pearl Jam's "Ten" would have been one the top of the list. Fast forward to 2009 and they ave re-released the CD in multiple formats with all sorts of new material. MTV2 in an effort to help promote the the album asked hip-hip artist, P.O.S. to perform a cover of "Why Go." I found the cover to be quite interesting... Enjoy.

FPU Class

To those who may not know, I have been teaching a weekly class called, Financial Peace University. It is a video based course taught by radio host / author, Dave Ramsey. It has been a wonderful experience. We are almost half way done with the 13 week class with an average attendance of 50 to 55 people a week. I have been extremely impressed with how motivated a few in the class have become.

During a time when the economy has become unpredictable, the class teaches common sense. It has been rewarding.

More updates ahead...

Weird Concerts From My Past: Incubus & Far 4/4/1998

Back in 1998, Darci and I drove from Manhattan, KS to Lawrence, KS one weekend to simply get out of town and go record shopping. Much to my delight the band Incubus was playing an early show at The Bottleneck. Being a fan of The Urge I had already been introduced to Incubus, but had never seen them in concert, so we went. There were four bands playing that evening, Incubus, Ultraspank, 8 Degrees, and much to my surprise.... Far.

The show was not well attended, only about 30 people through the door. Far was amazing and the singer from Incubus definitely had some vocal chops. Darci was fascinated by the dreadlocks that he was sporting at the time. Incubus was touring in support of their album, "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." One of the items I left the concert with that was pretty humorous was a cardboard mask of the dude from their album cover. One year later Incubus was practically a household name with the success of the album "Make Yourself."

I found the setlist online:

Redefine / Magic Medicine / A Certain Shade Of Green / Hilikus / Vitamin / Idiot Box / Summer Romance / Favorite Things / Glass / Calgone / You Will Be A Hot Dancer / New Skin

Ready For The Weekend!

It amazing how fast the week can fly. I am looking forward to a weekend of family and friends.

Next weekend I'll be heading to Kansas City to watch a couple of concerts, The Republic Tigers on Friday and Shots Fired on Saturday. Should be making the trip up with a friend from Springfield. If the weather cooperates we may even have the chance to play some golf with a few business contacts. I will enjoy the time away, but will miss the girls. It's amazing how much I look forward to seeing them at the end of each work day.

Until next time...

Swapping CDs

Recently I found a website where you can post your unwanted CDs to trade with others. The website is: http:// http://www.swapacd.com/

I have found some great deals and have replaced some damaged discs. So far I have swapped over 40 CDs in a few months.

I currently have 3 CDs on the way from a swap:

Janitors Against Apartheid / Open Eye Open - Split CD
Janitors Against Apartheid - 1 In 3000 Nerds Can't Be Wrong
The Vandals - Live Fast....

New Records

I recently found out that in the UK that there have been some 7" records floating around of Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen covering ska songs. So.... Using my magic eBay skills I was able to track both records down.

Both records are supposed to be limited to pressings of 300 each, but I highly doubt that is an accurate number.
